American Sonnet for the Man Who Spit on Me at the Student Encampment to Free the Land

“The purpose of racism is distraction.”

— Toni Morrison

I have your photo, dear. Consider this

its frame. Our history should live somewhere

more public than my brain. I write a spell

to air you out. I write a small revenge.

I write to name a simple truth: you’re real

-ly fucking cringe. The gag is that you’re just

a pest. When Toni said distraction, she

meant you. I write to bring my focus back.

There’s deadass more important work to do.

I write you in the margins, stink. I shrink

your foolishness to scale. I’m moving on,

but honestly? I write to leave a good

ol’ fashioned paper trail. You happened here.

It’s true. It doesn’t need to make the news.
